High Kitty, the lucky charm of hot air, is the first special shape hot air balloon guest announced to take to the skies during the 2017 Wairarapa Balloon Festival. 

The 33 metre tall gigantic balloon from Dallas Texas, will attend the Festival being held across the region over Easter weekend, from 13th to 17th April 2017. It will be High Kitty’s first outing in New Zealand skies and she will be joined by other hot air balloons, including a second special-shaped balloon which is yet to be announced.

The Wairarapa Balloon Festival is excited to announce their second Special Shape landing at various locations over Easter weekend, 13th to 17th April ... The Alien Rocket!
The Alien Rockets is as tall as a 10 storey building, standing at a height of 29 metres, and extraordinarily was designed and built completely by the pilot, Canadian Alain Bard.

LOY, Michael – Texas, USA Began ballooning in 1989 after watching a video of ballooning in Europe purchased a used FireFly balloon called Dawn Odyssey and obtained private hot air balloon certificate in 1989.  He last flew in the Wairarapa Balloon Festival with his special shape Off The Wall and is excited to be back this year with High Kitty.

BARD, Alain – Canada Alain has been an avid flying enthusiast his entire life, and is a Transport Canada certified pilot in powered paragliders and hot air balloons.  Since 2009, Alain's main passion has been piloting Hot Air Balloons. He is one of the rare people in the world to have constructed his own hot air balloon from scratch. In fact, he has made 2 of them, one of them being a "Special Shape" hot air balloon in the shape of an Alien Rocket Ship.

CURSONS, Scott – Wellington, NZ Scott is a self-confessed adrenalin junkie with kite surfing amongst his list of adventure hobbies. He’s a licensed aircraft maintenance engineer with nearly a decade of competition experience at Wairarapa, Levin, Methven and Hamilton. Scott’s another pilot who has spent time involved in international balloon festivals in UK, Metz, and Chateau DeOux in France, as well as Mildura in Australia in 2004.

He has been flying his balloon for the last 11 years and enjoys flying, I can stand in my basket with the freedom and peace and quite in the air that's the best feeling, my best flights was when I flew 3 times from Hamilton to the Kaimai's.

STACEY, Martin – Christchurch, NZ The Wairarapa Balloon Festival is very pleased to welcome Martyn Stacey back as the Balloon Meister for the Festival. Martyn is based in Christchurch where he is commercially flying balloons.   He has attended every Wairarapa event, being the overall winner in 2003 and has been flying balloons for many years.  He was part of the New Zealand team to compete at the World Hot Air Balloon Championships held at Mildura Australia 2004.  He flies for fun as well as being a commercial operator.  Martyn really enjoys the Wairarapa and meeting balloonists from overseas.  He is the Past Chairman of the Ballooning Association of NZ (BANZ).
